PROFESSIONAL STANDARD
B2B marketing demands more of us now.
Most B2B marketers built their careers through experience, good managers, brilliant colleagues, specialist learning and, if we’re being honest, learning a lot of it the hard way. That has produced some exceptional people. But the profession still lacks a clear shared standard for how B2B marketers develop, demonstrate and keep advancing their capability as the job becomes broader and more demanding. The Drum already brings together the insight, people, agencies, brands and work shaping B2B. With B2B Faculty, it is extending that commitment into the professional development of B2B marketers.
Why a professional standard matters
AI, technology and changing buyer behavior are reshaping B2B marketing. Marketers are being asked to understand more of the wider growth challenge, connect more disciplines and bring stronger judgment to the decisions that matter. For employers, that raises a simple question: how do you know your marketers are building the capability the business now needs?

Why Join
B2B Faculty asked Wendy a few questions about what employers and marketers should expect from stronger professional development, and what difference it should make back in the day job.
Why should employers give one of their marketers time for Applied B2B Marketing when they already have a demanding day job?
Sometimes the most valuable learning comes from having the opportunity to step outside the demands of the day job and look at a business challenge from a different perspective. Applied B2B Marketing creates that space while still connecting the learning directly to the work. Marketers can work on a real business challenge, explore it through different aspects of B2B marketing, test their thinking and take what they learn straight back into the business. For an employer, that creates value on both sides. You are investing in the capability and judgment of the individual while giving them the opportunity to apply that learning to a challenge that genuinely matters to the organization.
What should employers see their people doing differently the first Monday after they complete Applied B2B Marketing?
Applied B2B Marketing gives marketers the tools and confidence to ask better questions, make stronger recommendations and articulate the thinking behind the choices they are making. It can also give them greater confidence to engage with challenge, acknowledge what they don’t yet know and apply their judgment to reach a considered point of view. I would also expect to see greater confidence in bringing different perspectives together. Knowing when to draw on specialist expertise, when to challenge an assumption and how to turn different viewpoints into a decision are incredibly valuable capabilities. For me, that is where the impact becomes visible: stronger judgment, greater confidence in applying it and better work as a result.
My team already has deep specialists. Why do they need to understand the capabilities around their specialism?
Deep specialist capability becomes even more valuable when people understand how their expertise connects to the wider marketing and business system. A brilliant creative idea needs to respond to a real buyer and business problem. A strong go-to-market plan needs strong positioning, and an understanding of how the buying group actually makes decisions. Measurement needs to connect back to what we were trying to change in the first place. Understanding those connections gives specialists greater context for their own decisions and makes collaboration across disciplines much stronger. The opportunity is to build better-connected specialism, where people retain the depth of their expertise while understanding how it contributes to the broader commercial outcome.
If I already learn through my work, what will Applied B2B Marketing help me do that experience alone might not?
Experience is invaluable, but our perspective is inevitably shaped by the organizations, categories, teams and challenges we encounter in our day-to-day work. There is enormous value in stepping outside that environment and immersing yourself in a group of people working across very different businesses, categories and areas of B2B marketing. You are exposed to different ways of looking at familiar problems, different questions and approaches you may never encounter within your own organization. That perspective is incredibly valuable because you can take it straight back into your day job. You return with a broader frame of reference, new ideas you can apply to your own challenges, greater confidence in your choices and a community of people whose thinking you can continue to learn from.
B2B Faculty explains how it works
Can I work on a growth challenge from my own business or client, and will the resulting plan be useful beyond the program?
Yes, where the challenge is suitable. Client-side learners can work on a growth challenge from their organization. Agency and vendor learners can use a suitable client challenge where access allows. For the first three cohorts, learners will work with a live business or client Growth Brief. A simulated business challenge is planned as an alternative for future cohorts, giving learners without access to a suitable live brief the opportunity to develop and demonstrate the same professional capabilities.
Who decides what good B2B marketing looks like in Applied B2B Marketing, and how is that thinking kept close to the work?
The Drum’s B2B Faculty is created with curriculum contribution, challenge and oversight from leading B2B practitioners and business leaders, bringing current industry realities directly into the learning. This is designed to keep the standard credible, relevant and worthy of the Diploma it supports. The professional standard is demonstrated through assessment: learners must show that they can apply their learning, make informed marketing decisions, and defend the choices in their Integrated Growth Plan. Together, this creates a professional standard that stays close to the work, evolves with the profession and remains clear about what B2B marketers should be able to judge, do and defend.
